Moss removal in Rossendale from a team based in Haslingden: roofs, driveways, patios, paths and render cleared by hand and with steam, never high pressure on tiles, then treated with a biocide so it stays off. Ten minutes from most of the valley.
Tell us what the moss is on and your postcode in Rossendale and we will come back to you the same day.
Moss loves the damp, shaded surfaces the North West has plenty of: north-facing roof slopes, tiles under trees, block paving joints and render below leaking gutters. It holds moisture against whatever it is growing on, which is how it lifts tiles, cracks pointing and stains render.
Removing it is only half the job. Unless the spores are killed with a biocide, it grows straight back.
We check where the moss is, what it is growing on and the safest way to remove it.
Roofs: steam and hand scraping. Hard surfaces: pressure washing at the right setting. Render: soft wash.
A professional biocide kills the remaining spores so the moss does not simply grow back.
Everything that came off is cleared, gutters are checked, and roof cleans come with the 2-year no-moss guarantee.
Rossendale takes well over 1,200mm of rain a year and the valley sides are steep enough to keep the sun off entire rows of houses for months at a time. A north-facing roof slope in Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Waterfoot or Bacup can stay damp from October right through to March. Moss does not need anything else. Wet, shaded, textured stone and slate is as good as it gets for it.
We are based in Haslingden, so this is the moss we know best. The pattern is always the same: the back slope greens over first, then the valleys and the gutter line pack solid, then the stone flags in the yard turn slippery, and by the time somebody calls us the growth has been holding water against the roof for several winters.
A lot of Rossendale roofs are natural slate or stone slate, and moss behaves differently on those than it does on modern concrete tiles. It beds into the lap between the slates and lifts the tail, which lets wind-driven rain track past, and the constant damp works on the nails and the batten ends. Ridge and hip bedding goes soft where the moss holds water on it, and once the mortar has gone the ridge starts to move.
On the newer estates around the valley it is concrete interlocking tile, and there the moss holds water against a porous surface through every freeze until the top layer starts flaking off. Both problems are cheap to prevent and expensive to leave.
The valley is full of roofs that have been jet washed by somebody with a petrol machine, and you can spot them. Slates chipped at the tail, ridge mortar gone, tile surfaces stripped and greening over faster than they did before because the surface is now rougher and more porous. Water forced up under the laps ends up in the loft.
Our roof work is mechanical removal by hand plus low pressure steam. Steam matters here because the heat kills the root system rather than just shaving the top off, and it puts no impact on the slate. It is slower than a lance. It also does not cost you a roof.
Access is the first thing we look at, because valley properties are often on a slope with a narrow back yard or a shared ginnel. We work from a tower, ladders or the ground with poles as the property allows. Moss is scraped out of the laps and the valleys and off the tile faces, everything is collected rather than dropped in the borders, and the gutters are cleared and flushed on the same visit.
Then the biocide treatment goes on across the whole roof, and you get photos of the finished job plus a note of anything a roofer should see. See roof cleaning in Rossendale for the detail, and gutter cleaning in Rossendale if the gutters are the immediate problem.
The older properties here came with stone flags and setts, and after a few valley winters the joints are solid moss. Newer drives are concrete block paving, which greens over just as fast on a shaded side. Either way we clean with a rotary surface cleaner at a pressure suited to the surface, so the finish is even and there is no stripe pattern left behind.
The joints get flushed out, because moss left in the joint simply grows back from there, and block paving is re-sanded with kiln-dried sand afterwards. Steps and paths get treated first, since a mossy stone step on a slope is the thing that actually hurts somebody in January. See driveway and patio cleaning in Rossendale.
The modern estates around Rawtenstall and Haslingden are mostly rendered, and render with moss and algae on it is a soft washing job: biocide on, dwell, low pressure rinse. It carries on killing growth for months after we leave, which is why it stays clean. Pressure on render opens the surface and brings the problem back worse.
Mill stone and old brick with lime pointing get the softest wash we have, because the face and the mortar will not take pressure. See render cleaning in Rossendale.
Taking the moss off is only half a job. The spores and root fragments stay in the surface, and in a climate this wet they are away again within a season. The biocide treatment soaks in and keeps working for months, which is the difference between a clean that lasts one winter and one that lasts several.
It goes on every moss removal job as standard, not as an upsell, and on roofs it is what lets us give a 2-year no-moss guarantee.
Given the rainfall, plan on roof moss removal every three to four years in Rossendale rather than the five you might get in a drier spot, drives and patios every two to three, and render every three or so. Anywhere on the shaded valley side, shorten all of those.
Late spring to early autumn is ideal for the treatment to work, but moss lifts easiest in late winter when it is soft, and we work all year round. Being ten minutes away means small jobs are still worth doing and we can come back quickly if anything needs another look.
The price depends on the area, the access and how far it has gone. A stone terrace with a straightforward back slope is a very different job from a detached on a hillside plot with three roof planes and a conservatory in the way. We quote fixed, with the scope written down, before anything starts.
The quote includes clearing up, the gutter clear where the roof needs one and the biocide treatment. Send the postcode, what the moss is on and a photo if you have one, and you will usually have a price the same day.
Will it come back? Eventually some will, because the spores never go away. The treatment pushes that out by years, and roof cleans carry a 2-year no-moss guarantee.
Can you get round the back with the ginnel access? Nearly always, yes. We work off towers and poles and we are used to valley properties with no drive.
Can you do the roof, gutters and yard in one go? Yes, and it works out cheaper than three separate visits.
Rossendale takes around 1,200mm of rain a year, more than almost anywhere else in Lancashire, and the valley sides are steep enough that whole rows of houses sit in shade for half the day. Roofs on the north-facing side of Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Bacup and Whitworth grow moss faster than anything else we clean, and the stone flags and setts that came with the older properties hold it in every joint.
On the slate and stone-slate roofs that are common here the moss beds into the laps and lifts the tail of the slate, and the ridge bedding goes soft where it holds water. We have seen plenty of valleys and gutters in the valley completely plugged with it. The fix is removal by hand and with low pressure steam, working up the roof from a tower or ladder, never a pressure washer, then a biocide soak that kills what is left in the surface.
Drives and patios here are usually flags, setts or block paving, and after a few Rossendale winters the joints are solid moss. We lift it with a rotary surface cleaner at a pressure the surface will take, flush the joints out, re-sand block paving with kiln-dried sand and treat the whole area so it does not green over again by spring. Render on the newer estates gets a soft wash and the same biocide.

“My house is Victorian with a complicated roof structure.Peter managed to reach every nook and cranny to remove the moss which had badly accumulated on the North elevation of the building. The final result is impressive and I am sure will have added to the value of the house when we come to downsize next year. A difficult job well done. Thanks”
“Hydroclean did an amazing job other roof. Moss removal and years of grime cleaned away, then biocide treatment. We recently moved to the house, and this has made it look cared for! It actually looks like a new roof. Thank you very much.”
“Was very concerned about chosing the best trader to clean my Mums roof. My daughter spotted Hydro Cleanse online and I did all the relevant checks. I definitely shouldn't have worried as Peter was absolutely marvelous! He explained the procedure in detail and put my mind at rest. The work carried out was spot on! Thorough, efficient and very hard working guys. They cleaned up afterwards and did an amazing job for a very fair price. Much appreciated 👏. Thanks guys! Highly recommend 👌”
Yes. It holds water against the tiles, freezes and expands in winter, lifts tiles and blocks gutters. Removing it protects the roof.
Not for a long time. The biocide kills the spores, and on roofs we guarantee no moss for two years or we re-treat free.
No, never. Roofs are steam cleaned or hand scraped, then soft washed.
On lightly affected roofs a biocide treatment alone will kill the moss and it weathers away over the following months. On heavy growth we remove it first.
It depends on the surface and the amount of moss. Send a photo and your postcode for a fixed quote.
