Moss is a North West problem

The Pennine fringe from Rossendale across to Burnley, Todmorden and Rochdale is about as good as it gets for moss: high rainfall, low sun in winter, and thousands of concrete-tiled roofs, block-paved drives and rendered walls for it to grow on. The north side of a roof, the tiles under a tree, the block paving joints, the base of a rendered wall below a leaking gutter: anywhere that stays damp, moss moves in and stays.

It is not just a cosmetic problem. On a roof it holds water against the tiles, freezes, lifts them and blocks the gutters. On a drive or patio it makes the surface dangerously slippery and rots the pointing. On render it holds moisture against the wall and stains it green.

Removing it is only half the job

Scrape moss off and it grows back, because the spores are still in the surface. The part that makes the difference is the biocide treatment afterwards. On roofs we scrape and steam the bulk off from a scaffold tower and pole, then treat the whole roof with our DDAC 50% biocide, which kills what is left and keeps working for weeks. On drives and patios the surface is pressure washed at the right setting and then treated. On render the whole wall is soft washed with a biocide at low pressure. The dead growth weathers away and the surface keeps getting cleaner after we leave.

DIY moss killer versus a professional biocide

The moss killers sold in the DIY shops are the same chemistry at a fraction of the strength, and on a roof they have to be applied from the ground with a hose attachment, which means the top half of the roof gets very little and the north side gets none. Our DDAC 50% biocide is applied across the whole roof at the right dilution from the tower, and on drives and render it goes on after the wash so it reaches the spores rather than sitting on top of the growth. That is the difference between moss that is gone for a season and moss that is gone for years.

Moss treatment without removal

On a roof with light moss, a biocide treatment on its own is often enough. It kills the moss where it sits and the weather takes it off over the following months, which is cheaper than a full clean and is the right call on a roof that was cleaned a few years ago and has started to green up again. What moss removal costs

Price depends on the surface, the area and how heavy the growth is. A roof that has never been cleaned takes longer than a re-treatment. Send a photo and your postcode and you will get a fixed price, usually the same day.
