A valley that fills gutters faster than most

Rossendale takes well over a metre of rain a year and the valley funnels the wind straight up it. Both of those work against your guttering.

The rain washes moss and tile grit down off the roof into the gutter. The wind delivers debris off the open moor and the valley sides. Properties at Waterfoot, Bacup, Stacksteads and up towards Whitworth get both in quantity.

It is why the standard once-a-year advice often is not enough here, and we would rather say that than sell you a schedule that does not work.

Moss off the roof is the main culprit

On most Rossendale properties we clear, the material in the gutter is mostly moss and grit from the roof rather than leaves. Given the amount of moss on roofs in this valley, that is no surprise.

It matters because it changes the answer. Clearing the gutter treats the symptom. Treating the roof removes the source, and a treated roof drops far less into the gutters for years afterwards.

Stone terraces, shared gutters and access

A lot of the valley is Victorian stone terrace, often with long continuous gutter runs shared across several properties and cast iron rather than plastic.

Cast iron is heavy, it rusts from the inside where water sits, and a ladder against it is a poor idea. Working from the ground with poles avoids putting any load on it at all.

Terraced access also means rear gutters are frequently reachable only through a back entry or over a neighbour yard, which is worth sorting before the day rather than on it.

Ground-based vacuum, and footage to prove it

Gutters are cleared with a high-reach vacuum on carbon poles from ground level, up to around three storeys. Nothing leans on the guttering and nobody goes on the roof.

A camera on the pole records the gutter before and after, and you get the footage. You cannot see into your own gutters, so that recording is the only real evidence the work was done properly.

Downpipes, gullies and steep ground

Downpipes are run through and checked, and so is the gully at the bottom. On the sloping properties common in this valley, a blocked gully does not just pool, it sends water tracking across the ground towards the house.

Underground gullies on older stone properties silt up regularly. If a blockage is beyond what we can reach, we say so rather than pretending it is cleared.

The damage that starts at the gutter

Overflow runs down the wall. On stone it soaks in and on a valley elevation that never gets sun, it does not dry out again until spring.

Water also backs up behind the fascia and rots the board and the rafter feet. That is the expensive one, and it is invisible until it is bad.

In a Rossendale winter, standing water in a blocked gutter freezes, and ice splits plastic joints and pulls cast iron brackets out of stone.

Cast iron, stone and the older terraces

A lot of the valley still has original cast iron guttering on stone terraces, and it needs treating differently to plastic. Cast iron rusts from the inside out, starting where silt sits and holds water against the metal.

Clearing it properly extends its life considerably, because the corrosion is driven by standing debris rather than by the rain. Left full for years, the bottom of the run goes and the whole section needs replacing, which on a terrace usually means scaffolding and a shared conversation with the neighbours.

The brackets are the other weak point. They are screwed or driven into stone or into a timber fascia that may be a century old, and a gutter full of saturated silt is heavy enough to pull them.

How often, and what it costs

Twice a year for most valley properties: once in autumn after leaf fall, once in spring after the winter has thrown everything at it. Exposed properties and anything with a heavily mossed roof definitely want two.
