Why gutters block so fast round here

Between the rain, the trees and the moss coming off the roofs, gutters in the North West do not stay clear for long. Sycamore and lime seed, leaves in October, then a winter of moss sliding off the tiles, and by spring the water is going over the front edge instead of down the pipe. On the stone terraces in Rossendale and Burnley the gutters are often cast iron or the old half-round type, and they hold silt. On the newer estates it is the moss from concrete tiles that does the damage.

You usually notice it as a green or damp stripe on the wall under the gutter, a drip at a joint, or water sheeting off in heavy rain. Left alone, that water is soaking into the brickwork and the render, rotting fascias, and in the worst cases getting into the loft or a bedroom ceiling.

Vacuum gutter cleaning from the ground

We clear gutters with a high-reach vacuum system from the ground. No ladders on your walls or your conservatory roof, no one on the roof, and it reaches over extensions, porches and garages that a ladder cannot get near. A camera on the pole shows us what is in there before we start and lets us check the run is clear afterwards, and you get those photos.

Every downpipe is checked and unblocked as part of the job. If the gutter itself is sagging, split or pulling away from the fascia we will tell you, because clearing it will not fix that.

How often to have gutters cleaned

Once a year does most houses, ideally in late autumn once the leaves are down or in spring after the moss has finished coming off the roof. Houses under big trees, or in the wetter valleys like Rossendale, Todmorden and the Ribble Valley, are better on twice a year. If you have just had your roof cleaned we will have cleared the gutters as part of that, and they will stay clearer for years because the moss is gone.

Landlords, agents and blocks of flats

Terraces with no rear access, three-storey town houses and small blocks of flats are all reachable with the poles, which is where a ladder-based cleaner has to give up.

Gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning

Clearing the inside is what stops the overflow. If the outside faces of the gutters, fascias and soffits have gone green and grey, ask for the full gutter, fascia and soffit clean and we will wash them as well, usually on the same visit as the windows. It makes a bigger difference to the look of a house than most people expect.
