Driveways and patios in the North West take a beating: rain, moss, weeds between the joints, oil drips and tyre marks. Left alone they turn green and slippery. We use commercial-grade pressure washers with the pressure and nozzle matched to the surface, so block paving is not scarred and tarmac is not lifted.
After the clean we treat the surface with a biocide to slow regrowth, re-sand block paving joints with kiln-dried sand, and seal where you want extra protection and a richer colour.
We check the surface type, the joints and any staining, and pick the right pressure, nozzle and treatment for it.
A thorough pressure wash with commercial equipment lifts the growth, dirt and stains without damaging the surface.
A biocide keeps the growth off for longer. Block paving is re-sanded, and we seal the surface if you want a longer-lasting finish.
Drains are cleared, beds and paths are rinsed, and you get before and after photos.
Manchester gets less rain than the hill towns, closer to 870mm a year, but city drives carry a heavier load of traffic film and airborne grime on top of the usual algae.
That oily deposit bonds to the surface and gives algae something to grip, so the two feed each other. It is why a quick hose down achieves almost nothing on a Manchester drive.
The result is often a drive that looks grey and tired rather than obviously green, and needs both the deposit and the growth dealing with.
South Manchester is full of mature street trees, and Didsbury, Chorlton, Withington and Whalley Range get the full effect: shade, months of leaf litter, and tannin dripping onto whatever is below.
Leaf litter left on a drive over winter rots down into the joints and makes a perfect bed for moss. Tannin staining from the leaves themselves is not organic growth and will not respond to treatment in the same way, which is worth knowing before anyone promises you a spotless finish.
Tree-shaded drives want doing annually rather than every other year.
Victorian and Edwardian properties often have original stone flags, York stone and setts, which clean up very well and must never be blasted.
The interwar semis are mostly concrete flags and tarmac, much of it original. Tarmac wants low pressure or the bitumen lifts.
Newer townhouses and converted plots are block paved, which is the standard clean plus resanding with kiln-dried sand afterwards.
Access is the thing that shapes a Manchester job. Terraced streets with no rear access, narrow entries, permit parking and neighbours on both sides all affect how the work gets done.
We sort it at survey stage, including where the van can sit and how far we are running hoses. It affects the time and therefore the price, and it is far better agreed beforehand.
Rotary surface cleaner across the whole area for consistency, lance only for edges and spot work. Stripes from lance-only work are permanent, because they are a difference in surface removal.
On stone flags and setts, the lance is kept off the joints entirely so the pointing survives.
Block paving gets kiln-dried sand back in the joints, every time. Without it the blocks rock, water gets into the sub-base and the joints fill with moss and seed.
The whole surface is treated after cleaning to kill what is left in the joints and pores, which slows regrowth considerably through the following year.
Gullies and channels are cleared as part of the job. In the city a lot of drives drain to a single gully that also takes a downpipe, and when it blocks the water goes across the drive instead.
Standing water means the same patch goes green first every year and freezes first every winter. Usually the fix is clearing the gully rather than anything structural.
Area, surface, how much traffic film there is, access, and whether it needs resanding or sealing. Access carries more weight here than anywhere else we work.
Fixed price in writing before we start. Combining the drive with the roof and gutters in one visit is meaningfully cheaper in the city, because access and set-up is most of the cost.
Manchester rain plus traffic film is a hard combination for a driveway. Block paving on the newer developments in Didsbury, Chorlton and Prestwich goes green in the joints and grey on the surface, the stone patios in Sale and Worsley turn black under the trees, and the tarmac drives across Burnage, Withington and Stretford collect moss along the kerb line.
We clean each surface at the right setting: a commercial pressure washer with a rotary surface cleaner on block paving, stone and concrete, and a lower, angled pressure on tarmac so the surface stays put. Weeds and moss are treated at the root, not just knocked off, so they take far longer to come back.
Block paving is re-sanded with kiln-dried sand once it is dry, which locks the blocks and keeps the weeds out, and sealing is available on block paving, stone and concrete to hold the colour and shed the water. Drains, beds and paths are rinsed and cleared before we leave.

“Hydro did a brilliant job over two days of restoring my tarmac front drive, flags and bricked walls and steps to such an extent that they all looked as if they had just been built once finished. They also did the same in the garden with our Indian stone and concrete flags. Peter and Steve worked tirelessly throughout despite cold Rossendale wind and rain. I would highly recommend them.”
“Transformation! Peter did a fantastic job jet washing (then chemical treating) my yard and patio. The patio now looks like it was laid yesterday - no word of a lie. Peter is such a nice chap and a real hard worker - well worth the money and I will certainly be having him back again. Thank you so much and I shall be recommending you to others too. 👍👍👍”
“Our large block paved drive area and surrounding flagged areas now look like new!! All done professionally, efficiently and to the correct timescale. Value for money and well worth waiting for - I will use this company every time in future. Cannot recommend them highly enough!”
Not when it is done properly. We match the pressure and nozzle to the surface and re-sand the joints afterwards, which is the part most people skip.
Yes. Re-sanding of block paving joints is part of the job, and sealing is an option we recommend for block paving and Indian stone.
With the biocide treatment, typically a year or two before green growth starts to return, longer if sealed. An annual clean keeps it looking new.
Most oil, rust and tyre marks can be lifted or greatly reduced with the right treatment. Very old, deep oil stains may lighten rather than disappear completely, and we will tell you which before we start.
