What we clean and how

Driveways and patios in the North West take a beating: rain, moss, weeds between the joints, oil drips and tyre marks. Left alone they turn green and slippery. We use commercial-grade pressure washers with the pressure and nozzle matched to the surface, so block paving is not scarred and tarmac is not lifted.

After the clean we treat the surface with a biocide to slow regrowth, re-sand block paving joints with kiln-dried sand, and seal where you want extra protection and a richer colour.

Our driveway and patio cleaning process in Bolton

  1. 1

    Assess and prepare

We check the surface type, the joints and any staining, and pick the right pressure, nozzle and treatment for it.

  2. 2

    Clean

A thorough pressure wash with commercial equipment lifts the growth, dirt and stains without damaging the surface.

  3. 3

    Treat, re-sand, seal

A biocide keeps the growth off for longer. Block paving is re-sanded, and we seal the surface if you want a longer-lasting finish.

  4. 4

    Tidy up

Drains are cleared, beds and paths are rinsed, and you get before and after photos.

Driveway cleaning in Bolton: what you need to know

Under the moors, and permanently damp underfoot

Bolton takes around 1,050mm of rain a year, more on the higher ground, and sits below the West Pennine Moors. Drives here spend most of the winter wet and most of the year at least damp.

Algae forms a dark film across the surface. It is the single biggest cause of slips on domestic property, and on a sloping drive it is a genuine hazard rather than a cosmetic annoyance.

Moss follows into the joints, holding water, widening the gaps and eventually lifting block edges.

The mix of surfaces across the borough

Block paving dominates the newer estates at Horwich, Westhoughton and the developments around the town.

The older terraces through Farnworth, Little Lever and central Bolton run to concrete flags, stone flags and tarmac. Stone flags on the older stone properties north of town must not be blasted, because the surface and any lime pointing will not survive it.

Imprinted concrete is common on 2000s drives and is the surface most often ruined by over-aggressive cleaning, because the colour and sealer are both surface layers.

An even finish, not a striped one

We clean with a rotary surface cleaner, which keeps a fixed distance and pressure across the whole surface. That is what produces a uniform result.

Drives cleaned quickly with a hand lance come out striped, and because the banding is a difference in surface removal rather than dirt, it does not weather out. You can spot them years later.

Kiln-dried sand back in the joints

Cleaning block paving washes out the jointing sand, and that sand is structural. Without it blocks rock and shift, water gets into the sub-base, and the empty joints fill with moss and weed seed within a season.

Resanding with kiln-dried sand is included in every block paving clean we do. It is the single biggest difference between a drive that still looks good in two years and one that does not.

Sloping drives and the high ground

A lot of properties around Bromley Cross, Egerton, Smithills and the top of Horwich have sloping drives, and a slope changes the maths on slip risk considerably.

It also means grit and silt wash down from the top and collect at the bottom, so the lower end goes green first and the gully at the bottom blocks fastest.

Those drives want doing annually, and the post-clean treatment is the part that carries them through the winter.

Weeds and what cleaning will not fix

Annual weeds live in the joint material and are dealt with by cleaning, treating and resanding.

Deep-rooted perennials coming up through the surface usually mean the sub-base has failed, and no amount of cleaning changes that. If that is what we find, we will say so instead of taking your money for a job that will not hold.

Gullies, channels and standing water

All gullies and channel drains are cleared as part of the job. Cleaning moves silt, and silt heads for the drain.

Standing water on a drive means ice in a Bolton winter and it means the same patch goes green first every single year. Usually it is a blocked gully rather than a fall problem.

Cost, sealing and combining the work

Area, surface, severity, resanding and sealing set the price. Fixed price in writing before we start.

Sealing is worth it on sound block paving, typically lasting two to three years in this climate, and pointless on a failing drive.

Cheaper done alongside the roof or render, and the drive wants washing down after roof work anyway.

Why choose Hydro Cleanse for driveway cleaning in Bolton?

Bolton sits under the West Pennine Moors and its driveways take the brunt of the rain. Block paving on the estates in Horwich, Lostock and Bromley Cross goes green in the joints, the Indian stone patios in Egerton and Harwood turn black on the shaded side, and the tarmac drives around Farnworth and Westhoughton collect moss along the edges.

We clean each surface at the right setting: a commercial pressure washer with a rotary surface cleaner on block paving, stone and concrete, and a lower, angled pressure on tarmac so the surface stays put. Weeds and moss are treated at the root, not just knocked off, so they take far longer to come back.

Block paving is re-sanded with kiln-dried sand once it is dry, which locks the blocks and keeps the weeds out, and sealing is available on block paving, stone and concrete to hold the colour and shed the water. Drains, beds and paths are rinsed and cleared before we leave.

From Horwich and Westhoughton to Farnworth, Little Lever and Bromley Cross, we cover the whole of Bolton for homeowners, landlords and businesses. Fixed quote before we start, before and after photos when we finish, usually with you within the week.

What our customers say

★★★★★

“Hydro did a brilliant job over two days of restoring my tarmac front drive, flags and bricked walls and steps to such an extent that they all looked as if they had just been built once finished. They also did the same in the garden with our Indian stone and concrete flags. Peter and Steve worked tirelessly throughout despite cold Rossendale wind and rain. I would highly recommend them.”

“Transformation! Peter did a fantastic job jet washing (then chemical treating) my yard and patio. The patio now looks like it was laid yesterday - no word of a lie. Peter is such a nice chap and a real hard worker - well worth the money and I will certainly be having him back again. Thank you so much and I shall be recommending you to others too. 👍👍👍”

Bolton driveway cleaning FAQs

Will pressure washing damage my block paving?

Not when it is done properly. We match the pressure and nozzle to the surface and re-sand the joints afterwards, which is the part most people skip.

Do you re-sand and seal?

Yes. Re-sanding of block paving joints is part of the job, and sealing is an option we recommend for block paving and Indian stone.

How long will it stay clean?

With the biocide treatment, typically a year or two before green growth starts to return, longer if sealed. An annual clean keeps it looking new.

Can you remove oil stains?

Most oil, rust and tyre marks can be lifted or greatly reduced with the right treatment. Very old, deep oil stains may lighten rather than disappear completely, and we will tell you which before we start.

How much does driveway cleaning cost?

It depends on the size of the area and its condition. Send a photo and your postcode for a fixed quote.
