What we clean and how

Driveways and patios in the North West take a beating: rain, moss, weeds between the joints, oil drips and tyre marks. Left alone they turn green and slippery. We use commercial-grade pressure washers with the pressure and nozzle matched to the surface, so block paving is not scarred and tarmac is not lifted.

After the clean we treat the surface with a biocide to slow regrowth, re-sand block paving joints with kiln-dried sand, and seal where you want extra protection and a richer colour.

Surfaces

  • Block paving and brick

Our driveway and patio cleaning process in Bury

  1. 1

    Assess and prepare

We check the surface type, the joints and any staining, and pick the right pressure, nozzle and treatment for it.

  2. 2

    Clean

A thorough pressure wash with commercial equipment lifts the growth, dirt and stains without damaging the surface.

  3. 3

    Treat, re-sand, seal

A biocide keeps the growth off for longer. Block paving is re-sanded, and we seal the surface if you want a longer-lasting finish.

  4. 4

    Tidy up

Drains are cleared, beds and paths are rinsed, and you get before and after photos.

Driveway cleaning in Bury: what you need to know

Valley damp on a flat surface

Bury sits in the Irwell valley and takes roughly a metre of rain a year. A driveway is the flattest and wettest surface on the property, usually with a house or a fence shading part of it for most of the day.

That is ideal for algae, which forms the dark film you get across block paving and flags. Dry it looks like ordinary dirt. Wet it is slippery, and that is what most winter enquiries are actually about.

Moss arrives after the algae, rooting in the joints between blocks and in the gaps where water sits longest.

Block paving, flags, tarmac and imprinted concrete

Most of the newer housing across Bury, Radcliffe, Tottington and Whitefield is block paved, which is the standard job and needs its jointing sand replacing afterwards.

The older semis have a lot of concrete flags and tarmac. Tarmac needs far less pressure than people expect, or the bitumen lifts and you are left with a loose, pitted surface that traps dirt worse than before.

Imprinted concrete turns up on a lot of 2000s drives around here, and it is the least forgiving surface of the lot. Colour and sealer both sit on the surface, and too much pressure takes them off.

Rotary surface cleaner, not a hand lance

A rotary surface cleaner holds a constant distance and pressure across the drive and gives an even finish. That matters more than the pressure rating of the machine.

A drive done quickly with a hand lance ends up striped, and the stripes are permanent because they are a difference in how much surface has been removed rather than a difference in cleanliness.

We use a lance for edges, corners and spot treatment only.

Resanding is part of the job

Cleaning block paving flushes the kiln-dried sand out of the joints. That sand is structural: it locks the blocks against each other and stops them rocking and shifting.

Leave it out and the joints fill with moss, weed seed and grit instead, and within two years the drive looks worse than it did before it was cleaned.

Every block drive we clean is resanded with kiln-dried sand as standard. If a cheaper quote does not mention resanding, that is what is missing.

Treating the surface so it lasts

After cleaning, the drive is treated. That kills the algae and moss left in the joints and the pores of the surface, and it slows the regrowth noticeably.

The difference shows the following winter. A cleaned and treated drive stays walkable. A drive that has only been washed is dark and slippery again by the second winter.

Oil, diesel and rubber

Oil soaks in rather than sitting on the surface, so it wants a degreaser and dwell time, not more pressure. Fresh spills usually come out entirely, older ones often lighten considerably rather than vanish.

Tyre scuff, rubber and gum come off as part of a standard clean. We will be straight with you about anything old and deeply soaked in before we start.

Gullies and where the water goes

Gullies and channel drains are cleared before we leave. Cleaning a drive pushes a lot of silt towards the drain, and a blocked gully means standing water, which means ice in winter and faster algae regrowth in the same spot every year.

If the drive holds water in a particular place it is usually the gully rather than anything structural, and it is worth sorting while we are there.

Frequency, sealing and price

One to two years for most Bury drives, annually if shaded or under trees. Sealing sound block paving is worth doing and typically holds two to three years here.

Sealing a drive that is sinking or breaking up is a waste of money and we will tell you so.

Fixed price in writing before we start, and cheaper combined with the roof or gutters in one visit.

Why choose Hydro Cleanse for driveway cleaning in Bury?

Bury is our nearest big town and we clean a lot of driveways here. Block paving on the estates in Tottington, Elton and Radcliffe goes green in the joints, the stone patios in Ramsbottom and Holcombe Brook turn black under the trees, and the tarmac drives around Prestwich and Whitefield collect moss along the kerb.

We clean each surface at the right setting: a commercial pressure washer with a rotary surface cleaner on block paving, stone and concrete, and a lower, angled pressure on tarmac so nothing lifts. Weeds and moss are killed at the root rather than rinsed off, so they take far longer to return.

Block paving is re-sanded with kiln-dried sand once dry, which keeps the blocks locked and the weeds out, and sealing is available on block paving, stone and concrete to hold the colour and shed the rain. Drains, beds and paths are rinsed and tidied before we go.

From Ramsbottom and Tottington to Radcliffe, Prestwich and Whitefield, we cover the whole of the borough for homeowners, landlords and businesses, usually within the week. Fixed quote before we start, before and after photos when we finish.

For the full method, surfaces and pricing see our driveway and patio cleaning service page. We also offer jet washing for paths and walls, roof cleaning and gutter cleaning on the same visit, and car park and forecourt cleaning for business premises.

What our customers say

★★★★★

“Hydro did a brilliant job over two days of restoring my tarmac front drive, flags and bricked walls and steps to such an extent that they all looked as if they had just been built once finished. They also did the same in the garden with our Indian stone and concrete flags. Peter and Steve worked tirelessly throughout despite cold Rossendale wind and rain. I would highly recommend them.”

“Transformation! Peter did a fantastic job jet washing (then chemical treating) my yard and patio. The patio now looks like it was laid yesterday - no word of a lie. Peter is such a nice chap and a real hard worker - well worth the money and I will certainly be having him back again. Thank you so much and I shall be recommending you to others too. 👍👍👍”

Bury driveway cleaning FAQs

Will pressure washing damage my block paving?

Not when it is done properly. We match the pressure and nozzle to the surface and re-sand the joints afterwards, which is the part most people skip.

Do you re-sand and seal?

Yes. Re-sanding of block paving joints is part of the job, and sealing is an option we recommend for block paving and Indian stone.

How long will it stay clean?

With the biocide treatment, typically a year or two before green growth starts to return, longer if sealed. An annual clean keeps it looking new.

Can you remove oil stains?

Most oil, rust and tyre marks can be lifted or greatly reduced with the right treatment. Very old, deep oil stains may lighten rather than disappear completely, and we will tell you which before we start.

How much does driveway cleaning cost?

It depends on the size of the area and its condition. Send a photo and your postcode for a fixed quote.
