Where the debris comes from

Bury sits in the Irwell valley with the Pennines behind it and takes roughly a metre of rain a year. Everything that lands on the roof ends up in the gutter, and in this part of the world that means a lot of moss and tile grit alongside the leaves.

Up towards Ramsbottom, Holcombe and Walmersley you are more exposed and closer to open ground, so wind-blown material adds to it. Down in Whitefield and Prestwich the tree cover means more leaf litter instead.

Different sources, same result: a gutter that stops working in the middle of winter when you least want to deal with it.

Wet silt is the real problem

Most people picture leaves. What is usually sitting in the bottom of the run is a heavy black sludge of broken-down moss and grit worn off the tiles.

It does not flush through. Put a hose on it and you move it into the downpipe, which is narrower and blocks more easily. Left through a summer it compacts and hardens.

A vacuum lifts it out of the gutter entirely, which is the only way to actually clear it.

Cleared from the ground, nothing leaning on your gutters

The work is done from ground level using a high-reach vacuum on carbon fibre poles, reaching up to around three storeys.

No ladder goes against the guttering. Ladders resting on plastic gutters are one of the most common causes of the sagging runs, pulled brackets and split joints that we get asked to quote for repairing.

It also means conservatories, extensions and awkward ground are not an obstacle, which covers a fair number of properties in Bury and Radcliffe.

You get the camera footage

A camera on the pole records the inside of the gutter before we start and again when we have finished, and the footage is yours.

This is the one domestic job you genuinely cannot check for yourself. Nobody can see into their own gutters from the ground, which is exactly why it is worth insisting on evidence.

Downpipes and the gully at the bottom

Downpipes are run through to confirm they flow, and the gully at the base is checked. A perfectly clear gutter feeding a blocked downpipe still overflows.

Blocked underground gullies are common on the older terraces around Elton and central Bury, and they cause damp at the foot of the wall that often gets mistaken for something more serious and more expensive.

The damage a blocked gutter causes

Overflow at the front runs down the wall and puts damp into it. Overflow at the back gets behind the fascia and rots the board and the ends of the rafters, and you will not spot that until it is well advanced.

Frozen water in a blocked gutter splits plastic at the joints. And a run full of saturated silt is heavy enough to pull its own brackets loose over a couple of seasons.

What we find that is not debris

Every so often the problem is not what has washed into the gutter but what has happened to the gutter itself. Brackets pulled loose, joints that have separated, a run that has sagged so it no longer falls towards the outlet, or a section that has been knocked out of line by a ladder.

A gutter with no fall does not drain, it just holds water along its length, and no amount of clearing fixes that. Neither does a joint that has come apart.

How often and what it costs

Once a year works for most Bury properties, done in autumn once the leaves are down. Twice if you have trees close to the house or a roof carrying a lot of moss.
